※ For English speakers, an English version of the materials is available at the end of the Japanese version.
- 優秀生に関しては、将来のディープテックユニコーン企業輩出を目指すコミュニティ”DICE(=Deeptech Innovation Community for Entrepreneurs)”に招待する。 またUNIDOと東京大学が連携して実施しているAYSEP(=Africa Youth Social Entrepreneurship Programme)を通じて、アフリカ・ケニアへの派遣も実施した。

Deep Tech Entrepreneurship Practical Seminar
Overview
- Some participants will bring the expertise of their own or their lab’s research, and take on the challenge of developing startup business proposals that aim to solve industrial issues using that research and technology. Through collaboration with diverse selected students, leading professors of the University, and close involvement with companies, the program aims to nurture talent capable of addressing global challenges in the future, grounded in academic excellence.
- Participation, following selection after the first orientation, will mainly consist of graduate students from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Science, and Keio University Graduate School of Business Administration, as well as students from partner universities with credit transfer agreements. Some undergraduate and other university students may also be accepted. Target participants include students engaged in cutting-edge research (whether or not they currently intend to start a business), students interested in technology commercialization, and research-oriented students who also want to explore entrepreneurship as a career option.
- In past years, participants have come not only from engineering but also from medicine, information science, natural sciences, interdisciplinary fields, and economics. We encourage active participation regardless of academic field. For students unable to bring their own research into the lectures, arrangements will be made in consultation with the course staff.
- Students who are unable to incorporate their own research into the course may make arrangements in consultation with the course faculty and staff.
- The first half of the course will focus on lectures related to Deep Tech Startups (DTSU) and emphasize team formation, customer hypothesis testing, and fieldwork aimed at exploring industrial challenges. The latter half will center on repeated pitch presentations and feedback, refining business proposals toward the final presentation.
- Teams will be formed in a way that reflects the realities of entrepreneurship, bringing together students with complementary strengths. At the application stage, students are asked to indicate their intended role:
- Science / Technology: Providing research seeds and related expertise
- Engineering: Contributing knowledge in development and implementation
- Business: Contributing to business planning, including strategy formulation
- The organizers will make tentative team assignments, followed by ample networking opportunities in the early sessions to allow for adjustments as necessary.
- Fieldwork will be conducted outside of class hours and may include expert and corporate interviews, as well as site visits (e.g., factory tours).
- The final presentation (Session 13) will be delivered before all course stakeholders, while Session 12 will feature a networking event bringing together students, faculty, and collaborators.
- Outstanding students will be invited to join DICE (Deeptech Innovation Community for Entrepreneurs), a community that aims to foster the creation of future deep-tech unicorn companies. DICE provides opportunities including overseas training programs, small-group study sessions organized by field with experts from Japan and abroad, and community gatherings with course instructors and alumni. Last year’s overseas training programs sent students to Silicon Valley and Boston, where they visited research laboratories and incubation facilities at leading universities including Stanford University and MIT, exchanged information with startups, and interacted with local students. Students were also sent to Kenya through the Africa Youth Social Entrepreneurship Programme (AYSEP), jointly implemented by UNIDO and the University of Tokyo. (Support provided by DICE is subject to change.)
